ASH, Heyfield

When entering Heyfield from the west, you will pass ASH (Australian Sustainable Hardwoods), which is a privately owned company employing over 200 people at their Heyfield operation, which is also the company's headquarters. This is the largest hardwood sawmill in Australia, processing 155,000m3 of Victorian Ash and Australian Oak sawlog per annum. A strong focus on the health of the environment, and sustainabilty of this valuable resource sees a harvesting and regeneration operation which is designed to mimic the natural ecological process. When the trees are felled, the bark and leaves, containing most of the nutrients, remain in the forest thereby maintaining the nutrient cycle. The seed is collected from the trees, a regeneration fire conducted and the seed is re sown onto the site thereby maintaining the genetic cycle. Only the stored carbon in the form of the sawlog leaves the site. No pesticides or fertiliser are used, ensuring a natural process.
